I first felt the magic of the American Southwest as a child. Captivated by television, I spent many hours watching Westerns. The terrain was exotic, the cowboys heroic and the horses exciting… AND THIS WAS ALL IN BLACK AND WHITE! I was particularly blown away by the films of John Ford. My first visit to Monument Valley started on a bumpy dirt road. Fueled by chicken fried steak, we marveled at familiar, iconic formations. At day’s end, from our room at Gouldings, we enjoyed the sunset and watched “the Searchers” on video. In the morning, we did our wash alongside Navajo women at the local laundromat.
